HOOT Owl

Our Team

We have a SACE registered teacher with 16 years of remedial experience in the 10-12 year old’s classroom. Our resident Life Coach is an NLP qualified and Psychology Honors graduate. Our Junior high school facilitator is highly experienced in remedial facilitation and qualified in Speech and Drama. The Founding Director is a SACE registered ex Private School Principal with over 18 years of teaching experience and multiple certifications in metacognitive facilitation. We have specialist Art, Maths and Science teachers and Tutors as well as facilitators who provide intra-mural activities such as Capoeira, NIA dance and Robotics.

We prepare our students for an alternative, self-paced American curriculum (GED high school exit) by using the American Common Core aligned Mobymax Online curriculum service provider which is an AI tool that diagnoses and addresses learning gaps. We also supplement this with curated materials such as Happy Handwriter (OT created program) and worksheets, projects, art lessons, and other outdoor experiential learning activities. Each child has an individualised learning plan. We also have an affiliation with Cambrilearn which provides a fully supported online Cambridge curriculum.

Every child is involved in the construction of their daily timetable and termly goals with a focus on bridging existing learning gaps to facilitate proficiency. Because of our small numbers and low student: teacher ratio, we are able to create a classroom culture where each child is seen as an individual, and can be encouraged in their strengths and assisted with their learning barriers. We promote a mediated and metacognitive approach that takes the whole child into account, we do not expect the child to fit into a formalised structure, but rather adapt our facilitation methods and materials to best suit the child based on their own interests, learning styles and understanding.

At HOOT, we believe that parents play the most important role in shaping their child’s values and our role is to partner with forward thinking families to develop critical thinking and the skill to become a lifelong learner through our socratic approach.

“Shifting paradigms have always motivated me as a teacher and as a lifelong learner. I desire to inspire confidence, critical thinking and the love of learning in young people. This is what I believe is my life’s purpose. As the former principal of an independent school, an educational consultant and a private tutor, I have worked closely with students, parents and teachers and observed the regular disparity between the existing system and the actual needs of learners- a deep desire to bridge this gap was ignited and the concept of The HOOT Institute was born.”

“I’ve always had a passion for teaching language, art and life skills. I love being able to encourage students to be creative and express themselves in healthy ways that help them grow. I am also a lifelong learner and enjoy gaining new knowledge and skills.

I have 7 years of online teaching experience and it’s been such a blessing to harness these skills and translate them into a classroom environment at Hoot where I can mediate creative arts such as sewing, planting seeds and making crafts.

My aim is to make all my students feel seen and heard as well as guide them to be authentically themselves. I want to help them discover creative ways to build skills that help them enjoy learning, and that they can use later on in life, too.”

I have been very fortunate to be facilitating and teaching within the disability sector for over 14 years, creating learning opportunities for those needing a safe space in education that is not available in our mainstream education system. I am also passionate about sharing with teachers and parents on how to assist children and youth with learning barriers.

My desire is to create a loving and inclusive safe space for all, no matter what the challenges are!”
